Depart for the Corinth Canal, drive to the Temple of Apollo in Ancient Corinth, then to Acrocorinth to visit the Byzantine castle. Proceed to MYCENAE, where you shall visit the archaeological site and the tomb of Agamemnon. Your tour will continue through the city of ARGOS and arrivein Nafplion, the first capital of the modern Greek state, with its Venetian fortress of PALAMIDI and the fortified islet of BOURTZI. Here we can stop for lunch and then continue to EPIDAURUS and visit the ancient theater, world famous for it's outstanding acoustics. Finally, drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf before returning to Athens.
The Corinth Canal is a structure of great importance, as before it was built, ships sailing between the Aegean and Adriatic Seas had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese, adding about 185 nautical miles to their journey. The original idea for making the canal was conceived by Periander the tyrant of Corinth back in 602 B.C. and the one that finally started the project in 1830 was Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece. This was after the liberation from the Ottoman Turks and the project was finally completed in 1893 after several stops and restarts. Ancient Corinth is where St. Paul spoke to the Corinthians and a very important historical place for both the Byzantines and the ancient Greeks. Nowadays, for an extra thrill or two, surely not for the fainthearted, one can also bungee jump off the historical canal wall.
