3 Days: Ancient Corinth, The Canal, Mycenae, Nafplion, Olympia, Delphi

(Two overnight stays in Olympia and Delphi)

1st day:
In the early morning, our journey commences from Athens, heading westward. Our first destination is the Corinth Canal, a remarkable engineering feat completed in 1893, stretching 6 km to connect the Saronic and Corinthian Gulf. Moving on to Ancient Corinth, once among the wealthiest cities in ancient Greece, you’ll marvel at the 540 BC Temple of Apollo. The remains, reconstructed by Julius Caesar in 44 BC, lie close to modern Corinth. Our next stop is Mycenae, ruling from 1600-1100 BC, where the legendary King Agamemnon led the Greeks against Troy. Explore the Mycenaean Acropolis, encircled by 12 m high Cyclopean Walls, with the iconic Lion Gate at the entrance. Further down, discover the well-preserved prehistoric monument, the Treasury of Atreus. A brief 20-minute drive brings us to Nafplion, Greece’s inaugural capital, overlooked by Pallamidi hill (216 m). Enjoy lunch near the port with a scenic view of Bourtzi castle-island. Continuing through central Peloponnese (Tripoli, Megalopolis, Zaharo), we reach Olympia, where dinner and an overnight stay await.
2nd Day
In the morning, we explore the archaeological site of Olympia, where Zeus was revered, and the Olympic Games celebrated in his honor. Key landmarks include the Temple of Zeus (470-456 BC), the Heraeum (600 BC), the stadium (6th-5th century BC), and the museum housing treasures like the marble statue of Hermes (340-330 BC), prehistoric artifacts, and bronze exhibits spanning the geometric, archaic, and classical periods. Our lunch unfolds in the village of Olympia, and as evening descends, we relish dinner and settle in for the night at Delphi, continuing our immersive journey through Greece’s historical treasures.
3d Day
Dedicate the entire day to the ancient marvel of Delphi, revered by the Greeks as the navel of the earth. Explore the sacred Castalia spring, where Pythia, the high priestess, purified herself for divine pronouncements. Stroll the Sacred Way, beholding the Temple of Apollo, the Athenian Treasury, theater, stadium, Temple of Athena Pronaia, and Tholos. Conclude your Delphi experience at the museum. Following a delightful lunch at a traditional local tavern, venture towards Meteora, passing through Arahova city and Mount Parnassos. In the late afternoon, return to Athens, capping off a day immersed in the historical richness of Greece.
