Nafplio Day Trip from Athens with the Corinth Canal

Nafplio Day Trip from Athens: Your Day, Stop by Stop

Ask Greeks to name the most romantic town in the country and many will say Nafplio. With its Venetian fortresses, bougainvillea-covered lanes and little harbour castle, it’s the perfect escape from the city. On this private Nafplio day trip from Athens, you travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes with your own driver, stop at the famous Corinth Canal on the way, and spend the day exploring at your own pace. No coach, no crowds, no fixed timetable.

The Corinth Canal

We leave Athens along the coastline and head for the Corinth Canal. Take your time for photos and stroll across the historic bridge that links the mainland with the Peloponnese, looking straight down the sheer rock walls to the blue water far below.

Nafplio, Greece’s first capital

Continuing our road trip, we reach Nafplio (Nafplion), a town steeped in history and, according to legend, named after Nafplius, the son of Poseidon. Nafplio is famous for the little Bourtzi fortress on its harbour islet and the mighty Venetian fortress of Palamidi on the hill above. Its streets and buildings tell the story of the many peoples who ruled here over the centuries.

Palamidi Fortress

Our first visit is the Palamidi Fortress, built by the Venetians after fierce fighting with the Ottomans. After the Greek Revolution it was used as a prison, and its most famous inmate was the hero of the War of Independence, Theodoros Kolokotronis. From its walls you’ll enjoy wonderful views over the town and the Argolic Gulf.

A boat ride to Bourtzi, the “floating” castle

Next, a short boat ride takes you to the “floating” fortress of Bourtzi, built by the Venetians in 1473. Over the centuries it served as a fortress, then as a home for the town’s executioners, and from 1930 to 1970 even as a hotel. Seen from the water, it’s one of the most beautiful sights in Greece.

The old town of Nafplio

Finish your day by wandering the enchanting old city of Nafplio. Find the Lion of Bavaria carved into the rock, then lose yourself in the narrow lanes full of tavernas, little shops and cafés, perfect for lunch, a coffee or a scoop of gelato by the sea. By the end of this Corinth Canal and Nafplio tour, you’ll understand why so many visitors fall in love with this small, beautiful town.
