We leave Athens along the coastal road and make our first stop at the Corinth Canal. This narrow, 6-kilometre waterway links the Aegean and Ionian Seas and separates the Peloponnese from the rest of Greece. Walk out onto the bridge and look straight down the sheer rock walls to the water far below: it’s one of the most impressive photo stops of the day.

Ancient Corinth

A short, scenic drive through local villages brings us to Ancient Corinth. Explore the ancient Agora and the Doric Temple of Apollo, built in the 6th century BC, and see the podium where St. Paul was brought before the Roman governor. The site museum is full of treasures: mosaic floors, Mycenaean and Corinthian pottery, terracotta sphinxes, statues, relief plaques and the Roman head of Tyche, the goddess of luck. High above the ancient city rises Acrocorinth, the mighty fortified rock that guarded Corinth for centuries.

Mycenae: the Kingdom of Agamemnon

We continue through picturesque villages to Mycenae, the legendary city of King Agamemnon. Walk through the famous Lion Gate, run your hand along the massive Cyclopean Walls, and step inside the Treasury of Atreus, the great beehive tomb also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon. Standing among these stones, the heroes of Homer suddenly feel very real.

Nafplio: lunch in Greece’s first capital

Passing through the city of Argos, we arrive in Nafplio (Nafplion), the first capital of modern Greece and one of the most charming seaside towns in the country. Look up at the Venetian Palamidi fortress on the hill, gaze out at the little fortified islet of Bourtzi in the harbour, and enjoy a relaxed lunch in the old town’s lanes.

Epidaurus: the Ancient Theatre

Our final visit is Epidaurus, home of the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece, famous worldwide for its remarkable acoustics. Stand in the centre of the stage and whisper, or drop a coin, and the people sitting high in the top rows will hear it clearly. It’s a magical way to end your Mycenae and Epidaurus tour.
